No DNS

(Can't browse/Can't send or receive email)

First of all, if you can't browse (browsing = going to web sites), check to see if you're able to send and receive email. If you
can e-mail, then it's probably something wrong with the web browser. In that case you may want to go back to the main Mac page and click on the link for whichever version of Web Browser you're using.

If you cannot send or receive email as well and web pages won't load for you, check out the possible fixes below.

1. Make sure you are connnecting to bright.net

Do this by going into your dialler - Go to the Apple menu and then Control Panels and look for ConfigPPP, PPP or Remote Access. Open one of those up and connect from there, then see if you can get to web sites or get email.

If you don't have any of the above diallers, you may have FreePPP - click here to see how to find FreePPP. If you still can't find a dialler then you either don't have one installed and will need to install one (You can get FreePPP from our downloads page) or proceed to step 4, then look for a dialler.

2. Check out TCP/IP or MacTCP

Once you've made sure you're connecting to bright.net and you still can't get any information, it's time to check out TCP/IP, or on older Macs, MacTCP.

Make sure the settings are exactly like they are on the those pages, with the possible exception of you DNS number. In some areas, the DNS number is different. This usually doesn't matter, but you may want to call Customer Service or Technical Support to find out the DNS number in your area.

3. Trash the MacTCP DNR preference file

If all of your settings are correct, then the problem may be a corrupt preference file. here's how to trash it:

  • Do a find for "MacTCP DNR" (this is NOT case-sensitive)
  • Drag it to the trash - you may have to click on it once, then in the window below it drag it from there. (example below)

  • Go to the Special Menu -> Empty Trash, Reboot, then check the settings in MacTCP or TCP/IP.
  • Go ahead and try to connect and see if that fixes it.

4. Extension Conflict

It's possible that one or more of the System Extensions are conflicting. There are probably tons of Exntensions and Control panels in your mac - some of them are made by third-party software companies and sometimes they don't get along with each other. Your mac has an Extension Manager for all of these, but unless you know what you're doing, it's hard to tell what extensions to turn off and which to leave on.

For this reason, we can change the Extension Set to use only Apple software. To do this:

  • Go to the Apple menu, then Control Panels and click on Extensions Manager.

  • Click where it says Selected Set at the top and change it to Mac OS 9.0 All (or it may say 8.0, or whatever version of Mac OS you have)

    • Then click on restart and see if you can get to web sites and e-mail.

If you're still having problems or need help going thru any of these steps, feel free to call Technical Support at 1-800-743-5707.
