Question: What does it mean when my computer says,
"There is no dial tone?"

Answer: This means that the modem can not detect a dial tone. Check that the phone cord is plugged into the computer phone socket labeled line or wall. Check that the modem is plugged into the wall jack. Try picking up another phone in the house to see if your phones are OK. Try switching phone cords from a phone which works to see if there is a problem with the modem's phone line. Try taking a phone from another part of your house and plugging it into the computer's wall jack to make sure that the phone line to the computer's room is working. Sometimes the modem will not let go of the phone line when it is finished with the previous call. Try unplugging the phone line from the back of the computer for a few seconds. If you hear a click from inside your computer, it is probably your modem hanging up the phone. If this happens repeatedly, look in your modem's manual for suggestions for alternative modem init strings. You may want to try using ATZ, AT&F or AT&F1. This strings will set your modem to default settings. If you still cannot get the modem to detect a dial tone, something may have damaged the modem (i.e. a power surge or a lightning strike).
