The Internet is a global network of networks, a way of connecting computers (and other information devices) around the world. Because they are part of a network (a group of computers or other devices connected in such a way that they are able to share information and resources), computers on the Internet are able to share files and other resources.
Internet connectivity is possible because of a common language and communications protocol (a mutually agreed upon set of procedures, rules, settings, formats, etc. that allow different kinds of computers to "talk" to each other and share information) that works with most computers regardless of how they are designed or which operating systems they use.
No single business or organization is in charge of the Internet. Nobody runs it. Rather, it is a cooperative effort involving the works and efforts of many individuals and organizations who are a part of it. Advantages: Freedom from strict regulation has brought rapid growth and technological advancement. Competition among Internet-related companies has resulted in low prices and improved service. Disadvantages: The Internet is not well organized and it's somewhat unreliable. The loose, unregulated nature of the Internet has advantages and disadvantages. Some would argue that the loose, disorganized state of the Internet is part of the fun; there's always something new and unexpected to be discovered.
