Dial-up Networking and TCP/IP Settings

Sometimes settings in Dial-up Networking and in the Network control panel of Windows 95, 98 and ME can cause poor connections, frequent disconnections, or even the inability to connect at all. Here's a few things you can check out:

From your desktop, double click on My Computer, double click on Dial-up Networking and RIGHT click on the bright.net icon. Go down to properties and click on it. Where it states "Use country code and area code" if that is checkmarked, you need to remove the checkmark.

Then click on Server Types - only 2 things should be checkmarked in here: Enable Software Compression and Tcp/Ip. If any more are check-marked, remove them.

Click on the TCP/IP settings button. In here, Server Assigned IP Address should be dotted and Specify Name Server Address should be dotted. There should be a primary DNS number, 209.143.0.10. Depending on which area of bright.net you're in you may have a secondary DNS number - if you have 209.143.19.245 listed, leave it in there, if any other number is there, change it to 0.0.0.0.

The last two statements on the bottom should also be check-marked.

Click on ok, and keep clicking on ok until you are back to the Dial-up Networking window. Then double click on Control Panel, double click on Network, then double click on TCP/IP.

Obtain an IP address should be dotted. Click on the DNS Configuration tab at the top - the DNS should be disabled. Click on the Wins Configuration tab - should be disabled also. Then click on ok and keep clicking on ok until you are back to the control panel.

A window may pop up stating that your system settings have changed, you must restart the computer. Click YES.

After restarting your computer, try connecting to bright.net and see if that helps.
