Sometimes the "Save Password" box may be greyed out so that you can't put a checkmark in it. Here's the fix for it:
Please note: This fix may require your Win95/98 CD.
If Windows 95 doesn't think you're in a multi-user environment it will not allow you to save your password in Dial Up Networking's "Connect To" box. There is a work around for this, however, which will allow the Save Password check box to become "ungreyed."
- Choose Passwords from the Control Panel.
- Click on the User Profiles tab.
- Select Users can customize their preferences and desktop.
- Hit OK and restart your computer.
- Windows 95 will prompt for user name and password information before it "logs" you into Windows.
- For User name enter something like your name. It doesn't really matter what you enter here. But, you must put something in.
- Leave the password field blank. NOTE: This is important since you don't want to forget some password you may have entered here.
- Click OK.
(NOTE: If you don't click OK, but rather click cancel, you won't be able to save the password in the DUN icon.)
- Double-click on the bright.net icon in your Dial-Up Networking folder.
(NOTE: It may be called something else, like My Connection.)
- Type in the password in and check save password in the Connect To window.
Note: Each time you boot up with Windows 95 you will now get a "logging into Windows" window asking for user name and password. Remember to click OK. Obviously, you won't need a password in that screen if you didn't enter one when setting up the User Profiles.
If the Save Password box is still not available, go into the Network control panel and make sure that "Client For Microsoft Networks" is one of the installed components. If it is not, here's how you add it in:
- You need to install the Client for Microsoft Networks
- Open the control panel
- Double click on the Network icon.
- Click on Add, Client, Add.
- Click on Microsoft from the list of manufacturers.
- Click on Client for Microsoft Network and click on OK.
- Click on OK from the Network settings screen.
- If it asks you for a machine name and computer workgroup, click on the Identification tab.
- You can fill in any entries in these boxes as 95 just needs a name in those boxes.
- Click on OK and then choose Yes to reboot.
- When the machine reboots and you are prompted for a Username and Password, put in your Username but leave the Password field blank.
- Click OK and then OK again to confirm the blank password field.
- If you put in a password you will need to type in a password just to start Windows.
- This should allow you to click on the save password field.
